From the interior to
the exterior, the building was constructed with the following materials: hemlock
beams, 2"x6" T&G spruce, a layer of tarpaper, 1" reflective-faced
rigid foam board, 1" leftover pine strapping (in-filled with another 1"
rigid foam board), 90 pound waterproof roll-roofing, 2 1/4" white cedar battens spaced at 5/16" (forming gaps and revealing the roll-roofing).
The exterior cedar siding is another twist of the traditional
Maine garage aesthetic. The cedar siding hangs perpendicular to the ground, allowing rainwater
to easily drain down the sides of the building. The roughly milled cedar combined
with the shadowing formed by the gaps, creates a voluminous and textured effect.
Spacing the siding reduces material expenses and helps to ration natural resources.
