Energy usage over the year
Electric power: 2199 kwH X 3413 BTU/kwH = 7,505,187 BTUs
Propane : ....499 gallons X 91,300 BTU/gal = 45,558,700 BTUs
Wood :... .25 cords X 15,300,000 BTU/cord = 3,825,000 BTUs
Total : 56,888,882 BTUs / 1480 sq.ft. = 38,438 BTUs / sq.ft.
U.S.A. national average is 100,000 BTUs / sq.ft.
Maine is higher than this average....so we did pretty well. Keeping the size of the building down is important .
Don't be misled. Not all exterior glazing/glass is bad, especially when the building is designed like this one with a passive solar strategy. There are energy experts out there that are misleading the building/design world with statistics that make the case that more glass equals inefficiency. The sun is an energy source! There seems to a dumbing down in the energy/green building fields.
