105 Walnut Street is a contemporary remodeled residential home in Portland, Maine. Located in a densely populated, urban neighborhood, the home replaced a dilapidated and ill-designed colonial. The 1,600 square-foot home now provides the occupants with a pleasurable living experience. Energy efficient and aesthetically stimulating, the redesigned and reconstructed home is a significant advancement in the revitalization of Portland.
Situated on a steep street in Portland's historic Munjoy Hill neighborhood, the original One-O-Five Walnut was a colonial built in
the early 1900's. Totaling 1,300 square-feet, the original house had two floors and a small attic.
An independent contractor bought One-O-Five Walnut and hoped to repair the existing problems and resell the house. I was originally
asked to join the contractor's team to restore the foundation and fortify the structural support system. However, after I had the
opportunity to analyze the building myself, it was obvious that after nearly a century of abuse and many cheap, poorly executed
remodeling attempts, the structure was beyond repair
